Since the group's inception in the summer of 2003, we have sponsored a variety of events and participated in a number of community activities dedicated to walking. LSW sponsored two Pedestrian Critical Mass walks, one to commemorate pedestrian victims of automobile collisions on Western Avenue, another as a consciousness-raising event along traffic-clogged Milwaukee Avenue. We have also held several neighborhood "walkabouts," where a variety of residents enjoyed long walks together, noting both impediments to the walking environment and also the wonderful architecture, gardens, retail & restaurant opportunities, and lively people watching within our community. We held a Bloomsday walk in honor of James Joyce's epic novel Ulysses, and we participated in several citywide forums on transportation alternatives in Chicago. We've been called upon as consultants in a variety of local projects, from streetscaping improvements along Milwaukee and Fullerton Avenues, to a building re-use project at the corner of Central Park and Milwaukee, to a community plaza planned for the southeastern segment of the monument circle. We have also developed a successful listserve with more than 50 active members and we've spearheaded initiatives regarding safe walks to schools and work, unimpeded sidewalks and crosswalks, enforcement of traffic laws, and an improved environment for walkers, cyclists, and public transportation users alike. If
these issues are important to you, please join us at our next meeting.
Our group is open to any citizen of the community dedicated to our organizational
mission: Promoting Pedestrian Safety, Access, Awareness, and Community.
Lifetime memberships are available for $5 per person, or on a sliding
scale. The best thing you have to give is your time, and we always welcome
new ideas, participation in one of our initiatives, or simply joining
us for a walk and further dialogue. For more information, please contact
us. |
