WALK WINTER

Snow and ice on sidewalks makes it difficult, even dangerous, to get around in the winter. This goes double for seniors and children whose mobility can be hit hard by un-cleared sidewalks. Help us to keep Chicago walking year-round by remembering to shovel the sidewalk in front of your house. And while you're at it, why not help your neighbor with theirs, too?

But don't take our word for it. Chicago's Sidewalk Snow Removal Ordinance (0-8-180) requires that everyone "shall remove the snow and ice from the sidewalk…" and to use salt if the ice is stubborn. Failure to comply can result in a hefty ticket. And doing nothing isn't an option! It's a common misconception that attempting to remove snow and ice renders property owners liable.

The State stepped in to clarify with the Illinois Snow and Ice Removal Act (P.A. 86-1324.) (745 ILCS 75/1) which explains that anyone making a good faith effort to remove snow and ice "…shall not be liable for any personal injuries allegedly caused by the snowy or icy condition of the sidewalk…"

If you see sidewalks that are consistently un-shoveled, help to ensure year-round walking by calling 311. Be sure to have an address on hand. So, don't forget to Shovel It! Thank you for helping Chicago Walk Winter.
